152 In 1986 & 1987 two identical brooches were found during an archaelogical dig near Ribe, Denmark. They were found near farmstead sites from the late Viking Age -- the end of the 11th Century. You may see the intertwining dragon motif of the so-called "Urnes" style, the last of the great Viking designs named after a Norwegian stave church. The one we offer measures 1-3/4 in. high and 1-7/8 in. wide. |

311 A replica of a symbolic sword from the Viking Age. As real swords were too valuable to give to the dead, small models were made and laced in the grave to honor the fallen warrior. A king or chief would have his sword and other implements with him in his grave to use in the next life, but the ordinary Viking willed his sword to his son. Found in Denmark but the exact site is unknown. Our model is 1-1/4 inches long.

315 Buckle in Urnes style from the Late Viking Age, 1100 A.D. The original, cast in bronze, was found at Bejsebakken in Alborg. It is a fine example of the animal style of the Late Viking Area. The large animal struggles with a snake, symbolizing the struggle between good and evil. The motif was often used in early Christian art, and it is found on runic stones as well as on early Christian churches made of wood. The Urnes style gets its name from the wooden church in Urnes in Western Norway. Brooch is 1-1/4 inches wide, 1-1/2 inches high, including ring.

340 Thor, the god of thunder, rain and farming in Nordic mythology, rode the heavens in a wagon pulled by two goats. This ornament from about 700 A.D. shows the two goats, Tanngrisni ("gap-tooth") and Tanngnost ("tooth-grinder"). It was found in one of Denmark's richest Viking Age settlements from 600-1000 A.D., near Tissoe, a lake in West Zealand. Attesting to the wealth of the settlement are the remains of a large manor, a heavy gold necklace weighing over 2 pounds and countless other pieces. The lake is named after the Viking god of victory Tyr, and swords, lances, and axes offered to the god have been found there as well. Brooch is 7/8-inch high, 1-1/2 inches wide.
